About...

Majela is an award-winning South African artist with over fifteen years of professional experience in dance, teaching, and performance. He is a graduate of the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (P.A.R.T.S.) in Belgium, where he refined his choreographic and pedagogical practice. Throughout his career, he has performed and toured extensively both locally and internationally, collaborating with a range of companies and choreographers. His most recent international engagements include performances in Giselle, Swan Lake, and Rite of Spring under the direction of the late Dada Masilo.

As an independent artist, Majela has created several original works, including Don’t Let the Sun Set on You Here, Mommy Mommy, and Ditoro. His practice extends into education through Movement Studies, a platform of classes and workshops that focus on floor work, release technique, and African dance practices. These workshops have been presented at numerous arts institutions and companies both in South Africa and abroad, supported in part by the Standard Bank.

Since 2017, Majela has participated in a series of prestigious artistic residencies that have significantly informed his creative and conceptual development. These include Basel Mondial – Pro Helvetia (2017), Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (2019), The Centre for the Less Good Idea – Season 7, curated by William Kentridge and Phala Ookeditse Phala (2019), CND Paris – French Institute (2021–2022), and MuseumsQuartier Wien (2025), among others.

Through his multidisciplinary approach, Majela continues to explore the intersections between movement, identity, and socio-political narratives, contributing to the evolving discourse on contemporary African performance practice.
